EvolutionGraphic:
When he first started thinking about the main character for Nintendo's new arcade game Donkey Kong, Shigeru Miyamoto was determined to make him an ordinary working class guy who was not particularly handsome. Miyamoto gave Mario a cap because the limited programming technology of the time would have made it difficult to show Mario's hair moving while he jumped. Miyamoto dressed Mario in blue overalls so that his arm movements would be easier to see. Mario was given a mustache so players could more easily tell where his nose ended and mouth began in the days of lower resolution graphics.
His Name:
When Minoru Arakawa, the president of Nintendo of America first saw the Jumpman character from the original Donkey Kong he remarked that he resembled the landlord of his office building. The Italian landlord's name was Mario Segali. By the time the sequel, Donkey Kong Jr., was released in 1982, Jumpman had become Mario.
